An international conference on Francis de Sales, organized by the Institute of Spiritual Theology of the Salesian Pontifical University (UPS), concluded in Rome on Sunday, November 20. 200 participants, who came from four continents, gathered to reflect for three days on the spirituality and legacy of the bishop of Geneva. Among the participants were members representing 13 Salesian-inspired institutes.

The first part of the conference was devoted to posterity. In this part, each congregation and institute inspired by Francis de Sales presented itself, starting with the first, the Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary founded by Francis de Sales himself in the early 17th century, and ending with the youngest congregation, founded by Monsignor Giuseppe Cognata, SDB: the Salesian Oblates of the Sacred Heart. Not limiting themselves to statistics, the congregations explained why they were founded and how the charism is inspired by St. Francis de Sales even today.

In the second part of the conference, several themes of his spiritual and theological legacy were explored. International speakers accepted the request to delve into a specific theme. The following were developed among others: Mariology, convergences with Don Bosco, spiritual direction, spiritual accompaniment of women, use of Latin in letters, ecclesiology and vision on the Pope, and communication.

The conference’s concluding report was given by Fr. Ezio Bolis, from the diocese of Bergamo, also an expert connoisseur of the bishop of Geneva, who made an accurate synthesis of the two parts of the conference, underlining the common aspects and also the differences that emerged during these three days. The contributions of the various speakers will then be published in the conference proceedings, due out around summer 2023. 

Among other activities, the fourth issue of the university’s magazine, “Salesianum,” was presented; dedicated entirely to St. Francis de Sales, and edited by the conference coordinator, Fr. Wim Collin, SDB, the issue contains articles by various experts on the Doctor of the Church. Each of these illuminates a specific aspect, and there are also historical analyses such as the vision on the church, the image of St. Joseph, on the one hand, and, on the other, articles bridging the Salesian vision and, for example, the Second Vatican Council and Pope Francis.

Also, and for the occasion, the UPS lobby hosted an exhibit featuring twelve lesser-known portraits of the bishop, along with some quotes in different languages from his work. Moreover, valuable works from the 17th and 18th centuries in the possession of the “Don Bosco Library” of the same university were on display.

Several participants expressed the wish that this first meeting be only the beginning of a path to deepen their understanding of Salesian spirituality. It was, in fact, the first time in 400 years that 13 Salesian-inspired congregations gathered together. The scientific committee of the conference has taken up this invitation and will meet in mid-December to think about the future.

Domenica 20 novembre si è concluso il convegno internazionale su San Francesco di Sales, organizzato dall’Istituto di Teologia Spirituale della nostra Università. I 200 partecipanti, giunti da quattro continenti, si sono radunati per riflettere per tre giorni sulla spiritualità e l’eredità del vescovo di Ginevra. Tra i presenti c’erano i membri rappresentanti di 13 istituti di ispirazione salesiana.

La prima parte del convegno è stato dedicato alla posterità. In questa parte ogni congregazione ed istituto che si ispira a Francesco di Sales si è presentato, cominciando dalla prima, l’ordine della Visitazione della Beata Vergine fondato da Francesco di Sales stesso all’inizio del Seicento, e finendo con la Congregazione più giovane, fondata da Monsignor Giuseppe Cognata, salesiano: le Salesiane Oblate del Sacro Cuore. Non limitandosi alle statistiche le congregazioni hanno spiegato il motivo per cui sono stati fondati e come il carisma ancora oggi si ispira a San Francesco di Sales.

Nella seconda parte del convegno sono stati approfonditi diversi temi della sua eredità spirituale e teologica. Relatori internazionali hanno accettato la richiesta di approfondire un tema specifico. Sono stati sviluppati tra l’altro: la mariologia, le convergenze con Don Bosco, la direzione spirituale, l’accompagnamento spirituale delle donne, l’uso del latino nelle lettere, l’ecclesiologia e la visione sul Papa, la comunicazione.

La relazione conclusiva del convegno è tenuta da don Ezio Bolis, della diocesi di Bergamo, anche lui esperto conoscitore del vescovo di Ginevra, che ha fatto un’accurata sintesi delle due parti del convegno, sottolineando gli aspetti comuni e anche le differenze emersi in questi tre giorni. I contributi dei diversi relatori saranno poi pubblicati negli atti del convegno, in uscita verso l’estate 2023. 

Tra le varie attività è stato presentato anche il quarto numero della rivista dell’università, “Salesianum”, per l’occasione integralmente dedicato a San Francesco di Sales, curato dal coordinatore del convegno, don Wim Collin. La rivista contiene articoli di diversi esperti del Dottore della Chiesa. Ognuno di questi illumina un aspetto particolare, e vi trovano spazio l’analisi storica come la visione sulla chiesa, l’immagine di san Giuseppe, da una parte e, dall’altra, articoli che fanno il ponte tra la visione salesiana e per esempio il Concilio Vaticano II e Papa Francesco.

In occasione del convegno nell’atrio dell’UPS è stata tenuta esposta una mostra in cui venivano raffigurato dodici volti meno conosciuti del vescovo, insieme con alcune citazioni in diverse lingue delle sue opere. Inoltre, sono state messe in esposizione delle preziose opere del Seicento e Settecento in possesso della biblioteca universitaria Don Bosco.

Diversi partecipanti hanno espresso il desiderio che questo primo incontro sia soltanto l’inizio di un percorso per approfondire la spiritualità salesiana. È stata, infatti, la prima volta in 400 anni che 13 congregazioni di ispirazione salesiana si sono radunate insieme. Il comitato scientifico del convegno ha colto questo invito e si radunerà a metà del mese di dicembre per pensare al futuro.

ENG: The exhibition accompanying the Francis de Sales congress was set up this weekend. Twelve posters are representing twelve congregations inspired by Francis de Sales. Twelve works of art depict Francis de Sales, old and new together. And old books and works of art. All are on display in the atrium of the university.

Fresh out of the University of Padua, Francis had wanted to visit Milan, the city where the holy bishop had died seven years earlier. He always had the most fervent devotion to him, and this had grown with the friendship that bound him to St Charles’ cousin, Cardinal Federico Borromeo. It is certain his zeal for Catholic reform was very much part of this devotion. In the spring of 1613 he would go in pilgrimage to the tomb of his saintly model; and while celebrating Mass before the crystal casket, would be taken up in rapture…

For twenty years Francis de Sales would strive to bring about in his diocese of Geneva what Charles Borromeo had achieved in his diocese of Milan, meaning reform in accordance with the ideal defined by the Council of Trent. (A. RAVIER, Saint Francis de Sales, Torino, Elledici, 2022, 131-132.)

Francesco, uscito di fresco dall’università di Padova, aveva desiderato visitare Milano, la città dove il santo vescovo era morto sette anni prima. Egli conservò sempre nei suoi confronti la più fervida devozione, ancora accresciuta dall’amicizia che lo legava al cugino di san Carlo, il cardinale Federico Borromeo. È certo che in questa devozione c’entrava, e molto, lo zelo della riforma cattolica. Nella primavera del 1613 egli andrà in pellegrinaggio alla tomba del suo santo modello; celebrando la messa davanti all’urna di cristallo, sarà rapito fuori di se stesso…

ENG: A monographic issue of the magazine of the Salesian Pontifical University was produced on the occasion of the celebration of the 400th anniversary of the death of the Holy Bishop of Geneva. The journal “Salesianum” includes contributions by Alburquerque, Collin, Gonsalves, Le Goaziou, Marinelli, McGoldrick, Washburn and Wolfteich. Some authors look at the actuality of Francis de Sales, while others write with a historical approach. Next week it is off to the printing presses so that it will be available by the convention of 18-20 November 2022 in Rome.

In the next few weeks, we will gradually be able to announce more details about the concrete course of the long-awaited convention on Saint Francis de Sales.

La rivista “Salesianum” comprende contributi di Alburquerque, Collin, Gonsalves, Le Goaziou, Marinelli, McGoldrick, Washburn e Wolfteich. Alcuni autori guardano all’attualità di Francesco di Sales, altri scrivono con un approccio storico. La prossima settimana andrà in stampa, in modo da essere disponibile per il convegno del 18-20 novembre 2022 a Roma.

Today we celebrate the liturgical feast of Jeanne de Chantal. In this year we also remember that she was born 450 years ago on the 28th of January 1572. Jeanne her life is linked to the figure of Francis de Sales, her director and spiritual guide, of whom she was a follower and at the same time inspirer and collaborator. With the help of Francis de Sales, she gave life to a new foundation dedicated to the Visitation, the love for God and the assistance of the poor and the sick.

Many congregations, organizations, and institutions are inspired by the spiritual legacy of Saint Francis de Sales, but Francis himself founds only one order. It is in the year 1610 when Saint Francis de Sales founded the Order of the Visitation of Saint Mary in Annecy together with Saint Jeanne de Chantal. Afterward, and very soon in the 17th century, other congregations that had Francis de Sales as their patron saint was founded, but the Visitation, starting in Annecy and soon spreading in the kingdom of France and other countries are the only one founded by the bishop.

We are delighted that the order of the visitation will also be present at the congress in Rome this fall and that a sister of the visitation will come to tell us about the foundation of her order and the Franciscan inspiration.
